According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), cybercrime is any criminal activity carried out by means of computers or the internet and is expected to rob individuals of $1.5 trillion in 2018. To raise awareness about the importance of protecting electronic data, the DHS and the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) began an initiative 15 years ago to combat cybercrimes and National Cyber security Awareness Month is now recognized every October.

With cyber security in mind, The Cecilian Bank will host its 2nd annual E-Cycle fundraiser event on Monday, October 22 from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm at its Historic Downtown Elizabethtown Operations Center at 227 W. Dixie Avenue (Next to the Historic State Theater) The public is invited to discard old electronics to include chargeable batteries, UPS units, Laptops, PCs, Keyboards, mouse, printers, other electronics, ink and toner, electrical wires and cables and personal paper records (up to one pound per person) in a safe and secure location. Green State Metals will purchase the recycled materials and the proceeds from the sale will benefit the United Way of Central Kentucky.

"This is a win-win for everyone" said Jim Eastridge, Senior Vice President and Information Security Officer at The Cecilian Bank. “You can safely dispose of your old outdated electronics and personal papers to protect your identity while benefiting a great cause”

Watch as your hard drive is removed and destroyed by the “Crushinator”, a device that pierces and crushes hard drives so any stored information is destroyed and no longer accessible. Additionally, The Cecilian Bank will show videos of real world hackers and the risk of cybercrime and identity theft.

“It is our goal to lower the risk of cybercrime and identity theft by educating the public on good data protection behaviors” said Eastridge.

Information on identity theft protection options offered by The Cecilian Bank and other banking opportunities will be on display. Refreshments will be served while supplies last and participants will have an opportunity to register to win door prizes.

There are a few recycling restrictions to keep in mind. Items that will not be accepted are household batteries, TV’s, CRT, Monitors, flat screens, stereo equipment, air conditioners, microwaves, smoke detectors, oil, fuel, paints, propane tanks or other liquids and flammables, motors and medical equipment.

For more information regarding this event or the E-Cycle Program, please call The Cecilian Bank’s E-Cycle Hotline at (270)982-8419. Leave a message and your call will be returned promptly.
